How to partially export or split a file in Family Tree Maker
The process of splitting a tree in Family Tree Maker does not actually split a file into separate parts. Instead, you are creating a new family tree using selected individuals from the main file. It is important to note that nothing will change in your tree when performing the process below.

How to Partially Export or Split Tree
1. Click File and select Export from the drop-down menu.
2. In the Export window, place the bullet next to Selected Individuals. This will open the Filter Individuals window, allowing you to specify which individuals to include in the new tree.
3. You can select individuals to include in the tree using the Include button, or you can include a specific branch using the Ancestors and Descendants buttons.
- The Include button adds just the selected individual from the list on the left to the list on the right.
- The Include all button adds everyone from the list on the left, selected or not, to the list on the right.
- The Ancestors button allows you to add the selected individual and their direct ancestors to the list on the right. Selecting this option will open a new window that allows you to customize how Ancestors will be included.
- Generations of Ancestors to include: Allows you to select the number of generation’s back you want to be filtered to the list on the right. The maximum number is 999 generations.
- Include all parents and Include only preferred parents lets you choose how multiple parent information is handled for individuals.
- Include all spouses and Include only preferred spouses works the same as Include all parents. This allows you to choose how multiple spouse information is handled for individuals.
- The Include ancestors’ descendants checkbox lets you choose if descendants of ancestors’ will be included or not, and how many generations down will be included. The maximum number that can be entered here is 15. Once you finish making your selections click OK.
- The Filter In button lets you set custom filters to control the names to be added to the right side. Selecting this option will open the Filter Individuals By Criteriawindow. For example, if you wanted everyone born after 1900, your filter box would look like this:
- The Exclude allows you to select individuals from the right side and remove them from this list.
- The Exclude All button removes all individuals from the list on the right, selected or not.
- The Filter Out button lets you set custom filters to control the names to be removed from the right side. For example, if you wanted to remove everyone who born before 1800, your filter box would look like this:
After using these different filter buttons to separate the individuals you want in this file, click the OK button at the bottom of the Filter Individuals window. This will return you to the Export window.
4. Select the desired format from the Output format drop-down.
5. Click OK to open the Export to pane. Select a destination for the new file, provide a new tree name, and then click Save to create the tree.

Using the Export Branch Wizard
IMPORTANT: The Export Branch Wizard is new to Family Tree Maker 2014. If you are using an older version, refer to Method 1.
The Export Branch Wizard lets you easily export people related to the person selected in the Tree tab. You can export to the same formats as the Export command, but the Export Branch Wizard automatically filters the project to relatives (ancestors and descendants) of the selected person.
1. From the People workspace Tree tab, right-click an individual’s name in the Pedigree View.
2. Click Export Branch.
Note: The Export Branch Wizard can also be accessed by right-clicking an individual from the Index pane or the Person menu drop-down.
3. Select the name of the person who is at the root of the branch you want to export.
4. Click the Next button.
5. Modify the tree name and output options if necessary.
6. Click the Next button.
7. The new branch will be exported and saved to the default directory for Family Tree Maker files (typically …\Documents\Family Tree Maker).
8. Click the Next button again.
9. If you wish to open the newly created branch in Family Tree Maker, leave the Open new branch in Family Tree Maker option selected. If not, uncheck the box, and then click the Finish button. This will save the file in your Family Tree Maker folder located in your Documents Library (unless you previously designated an alternate location for Family Tree Maker files).
You can also check the box for Open branch file location which will open the location where the file is saved or you can choose to Attach branch file to an email message.
